About Pediatric Physical Therapy

Our pediatric physical therapy evaluations are typically conducted in the comfort of your home, allowing us to assess your child’s abilities within their natural daily environment. When appropriate, we also offer evaluations in larger community spaces to best support your child’s needs and movement opportunities.

During the evaluation

We complete a comprehensive, individualized assessment while collaborating with you to identify your concerns and goals for your child. We review your child’s health history, current medications, emotional regulation, and functional skills, as well as environmental factors that may impact movement and participation.

All evaluations are one-on-one and typically last 60 - 90 minutes, providing ample time for observation, assessment, and parent education.

If your home is not the ideal setting for your child’s evaluation we are happy to meet in alternative locations such as local parks, the Alaska Rock Gym, the YMCA, or other community spaces that offer open areas for movement. This flexibility allows us to observe higher-level gross motor skills such as running, jumping, climbing, biking and coordination in an environment that supports success.

What to wear?

Your child should wear comfortable clothing that allows us to easily observe the trunk, arms, and legs to assess posture, alignment, muscle strength, flexibility, and movement patterns.

A General Pediatric Physical Therapy Evaluation May Include:

  • Review of your child’s medical and developmental history, including surgeries and orthopedic concerns

  • A standardized gross motor developmental assessment

  • Screening for the need for assistive or mobility devices

  • Home or community environment safety screening

  • Referrals to other healthcare professionals when appropriate

Our Goal:

To provide a thorough, family-centered evaluation in the setting that best supports your child’s movement, confidence, and development.

Aquatic Therapy

In addition to land-based services, we also provide aquatic therapy when appropriate. Aquatic therapy can be especially beneficial for children who benefit from reduced joint loading, increased sensory input, or a motivating environment to support strength, endurance, coordination, and confidence in movement.
